UK/IT Version – The Phoenix Hotel, a historic motel in San Francisco that became famous as a hangout for touring rock stars such as Kurt Cobain, David Bowie and Neil Young, closed on 1 January.
Founded in 1956 as an hourly-rate establishment called the Caravan Motel, it was purchased by Chip Conley in 1987 on the recommendation of Bay Area concert promoter Bill Graham, who transformed it into the Phoenix.
The COVID-19 pandemic and the difficult hotel climate in the city took their toll, and Conley and his business partners, Isabel Manchester and Jamie Flanagan, decided not to renew the lease at the end of 2025. The partners said in a statement that the hotel had been operating at a loss since 2020 and that the chaotic street conditions in the Tenderloin and the weakness of San Francisco’s hotel industry made it unlikely that it would generate profits in the short term.
‘The Phoenix Hotel has long been more than just a hotel: it is a haven for artists, musicians, locals and travellers from around the world,’ the statement read. ‘The Phoenix Hotel has quickly become a symbol of San Francisco’s counterculture and rebellious spirit.’
Conley, who was only 26 when he bought the hotel, began advertising it to tour managers in the 1980s, offering them ample parking for coaches and a location within walking distance of downtown San Francisco music venues such as the Great American Music Hall, the Warfield and the Fillmore. Conley also offered free massages for stressed-out tour managers.
The stories behind its history seem endless. Debbie Harry and JFK Jr. of Blondie were accidentally booked into the same room. Linda Ronstadt rented the entire hotel for two weeks while dating director George Lucas. In 1993, actor Keanu Reeves did a cannonball dive near a table of IRS employees, drenching them all. Johnny Rotten, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Beastie Boys, Sinead O’Connor and Red Hot Chili Peppers are just a few of the many artists who have stayed there. The frontman of the latter group, Anthony Kiedis, once even called the Phoenix “the most sexually, intellectually and culturally stimulating hotel in San Francisco”.
Then there is the eternal link with Cobain. After the Nirvana frontman’s suicide in 1994, a note was found in his wallet. It was written on Phoenix Hotel letterhead and appeared to contain harsh marriage vows to the rocker’s wife, Courtney Love, who used to bathe naked in the hotel pool: ‘Do you, Kurt Cobain, take Courtney Michelle Love to be your lawful wife in pieces?’ read part of the note, ‘even when she’s a pimple-faced bitch and steals all your money for drugs and prostitutes’. The note further fuelled conspiracy theories about Cobain’s death, but Love later claimed to be the author. In any case, its existence only further engraved the Phoenix in rock history.
The news of the closure comes a year after the purchase of the lot by a world-renowned pastry chef. Michel Suas bought the 38,000-square-foot lot where the Phoenix stands last year for $ 9.1 million.

Era scritto sulla carta intestata del Phoenix Hotel e sembrava contenere delle aspre promesse di matrimonio sulla moglie del rocker, Courtney Love, che era solita fare il bagno nuda nella piscina dell’hotel: “Tu, Kurt Cobain, vorresti prendere Courtney Michelle Love come tua legittima moglie a pezzi?” si leggeva in parte nella nota, “anche quando è una stronza con i brufoli e ti ruba tutti i soldi per droga e prostitute”. Il biglietto alimentò ulteriormente le teorie del complotto sulla morte di Cobain, ma in seguito Love dichiarò di esserne l’autrice. In ogni caso, la sua esistenza non fece che incidere ulteriormente i Phoenix nella storia del rock.
