Lazarus is one of David Bowie’s last works, a rock opera written in 2015 together with award winning Irish playwright Enda Walsh. The ideal sequel to Walter Tevis’ The Man who Fell to Earth, this performance-testament is directed by Valter Malosti and whose protagonist is Thomas Jerome Newton, the turbulent interstellar migrant forced to remain on Earth, here interpreted by the singer and frontman of Afterhours, Manuel Agnelli.
“The first performance of Lazarus took place on December 7, 2015 at the New York Theatre Workshop in Manhattan which was also the last time David Bowie appeared in public who passed away a few months later on January 10, 2016. Though suffering from illness, in an extraordinary and moving creative effort he left us this strange piece of musical theatre which can be considered, along with his magnificent album Blackstar, his creative testament […] Newton both is and isn’t Bowie at the same time. But it’s through this very act of distancing that we gain access to a deeper intimacy”.

Diretto da Valter Malosti e interpretato da Manuel Agnelli, Lazarus è l’opera rock che David Bowie ha scritto insieme a Enda Walsh e per la quale ha adattato alcune delle sue canzoni più famose tra cui Life On Mars? e Heroes e ha composto appositamente quattro nuovi pezzi.
Lazarus è uno degli ultimi lavori di David Bowie, un’opera rock scritta nel 2015 insieme alla pluripremiata drammaturga irlandese Enda Walsh. Sequel ideale di The Man who Fell to Earth di Walter Tevis, questa performance-testamento è diretta da Valter Malosti e ha come protagonista Thomas Jerome Newton, il turbolento migrante interstellare costretto a rimanere sulla Terra, qui interpretato dal cantante e frontman degli Afterhours , Manuel Agnelli.
“La prima rappresentazione di Lazarus ha avuto luogo il 7 dicembre 2015 al New York Theatre Workshop di Manhattan, che è stata anche l’ultima volta in cui è apparso in pubblico David Bowie, scomparso pochi mesi dopo, il 10 gennaio 2016. Sebbene affetto da malattia, in uno sforzo creativo straordinario e commovente ci ha lasciato questo strano pezzo di teatro musicale che può essere considerato, insieme al suo magnifico album Blackstar, il suo testamento creativo […] Newton è e non è Bowie allo stesso tempo. Ma è proprio attraverso questo atto di presa di distanza che si accede a un’intimità più profonda”.
