UK/IT Version – Pink Floyd has released its first new music in almost three decades to raise money for the people of Ukraine. “Hey Hey Rise Up” features Pink Floyd members David Gilmour and Nick Mason, with vocals from Ukrainian singer Andriy Khlyvnyuk of the band BoomBox.
The track features Khlyvnyuk singing a patriotic Ukrainian song from a clip he recorded in front of Kyiv’s St. Sophia Cathedral and posted on social media.
Gilmour, who performed with BoomBox in London in 2015, said the video was “a powerful moment that made me want to put it to music”.
After Russia’s invasion, Khlyvnyuk cut short a tour of the US to return to Ukraine and join a territorial defence unit.
Gilmour said he spoke to Khlyvnyuk, who was recovering in a hospital from a mortar shrapnel injury, while he was writing the song. He said: “I played him a little bit of the song down the phone line and he gave me his blessing. We both hope to do something together in person in the future.”
The band says proceeds will go to the Ukraine Humanitarian Relief Fund.
“We want to express our support for Ukraine, and in that way show that most of the world thinks that it is totally wrong for a superpower to invade the independent democratic country that Ukraine has become,” Gilmour said.
Pink Floyd was founded in London in the mid-1960s and helped forge the UK psychedelic scene before releasing influential 1970s albums including The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall.
Original member Roger Waters quit in 1985, and the remaining members of Pink Floyd last recorded together for the 1994 album The Division Bell.

La traccia presenta Khlyvnyuk che canta una canzone patriottica ucraina da una clip che ha registrato davanti alla Cattedrale di Santa Sofia a Kiev e pubblicato sui social media.
Gilmour, che si è esibito con i BoomBox a Londra nel 2015, ha affermato che il video è stato “un momento potente che mi ha fatto venire voglia di metterlo in musica”.
Dopo l’invasione della Russia, Khlyvnyuk ha interrotto un tour degli Stati Uniti per tornare in Ucraina e unirsi a un’unità di difesa territoriale.
Gilmour ha detto di aver parlato con Khlyvnyuk, che si stava riprendendo in ospedale da una ferita da schegge di mortaio, mentre stava scrivendo la canzone. Ha detto: “Gli ho fatto ascoltare un po’ della canzone lungo la linea telefonica e mi ha dato la sua benedizione. Entrambi speriamo di fare qualcosa insieme di persona in futuro”.
La band afferma che i proventi andranno al Fondo di soccorso umanitario ucraino.
“Vogliamo esprimere il nostro sostegno all’Ucraina e in questo modo mostrare che la maggior parte del mondo pensa che sia totalmente sbagliato che una superpotenza invada il paese democratico indipendente che è diventata l’Ucraina”, ha affermato Gilmour.
I Pink Floyd sono stati fondati a Londra a metà degli anni ’60 e hanno contribuito a forgiare la scena psichedelica del Regno Unito prima di pubblicare influenti album degli anni ’70 tra cui The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here e The Wall.
Il membro originale Roger Waters lasciò la band nel 1985 e i restanti membri dei Pink Floyd hanno registrato l’ultima volta insieme l’album The Division Bell nel 1994.
