UK/IT Version – Michael Lang, organizer and co-creator of the legendary Woodstock Music and Art Fair, died on Saturday (January 8) at Sloan Kettering hospital in New York City from a rare form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 77, was just 24 when he helped conceive the legendary four-day festival in 1969.

Lang, a Brooklyn native, made a name for himself as a concert promoter in the late ‘60s, particularly the 1968 Miami Pop Festival that included Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry and Frank Zappa.
But it was in Woodstock, N.Y. — actually in Bethel, the festival location — where Lang made history alongside Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfeld and John Roberts.

More than 400,000 people showed up for the three-day festival in mid-August 1969, converging on Max Yasgur’s farm about 50 miles northwest of New York City to see Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Who, Carlos Santana, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and many others. More than 30 acts performed on the main stage. “Woodstock offered an environment for people to express their better selves, if you will,” Lang told Pollstar in 2019. “It was probably the most peaceful event of its kind in history. That was because of expectations and what people wanted to create there.”

Lang, with his distinctive head of bushy brown hair, is ubiquitous in Michael Wadleigh’s 1970 documentary movie chronicling the festival, which included plenty of drugs and sex in addition to the rock and roll.
“From the beginning, I believed that if we did our job right and from the heart, prepared the ground and set the right tone, people would reveal their higher selves and create something amazing,” he wrote in his memoir, “The Road to Woodstock.”

Lang followed up the show’s unimaginable success with two more festivals: Woodstock ‘94, featuring Green Day, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nine Inch Nails, and Woodstock ‘99, with Metallica and Rage Against the Machine.
A planned 50th anniversary show in 2019 in Woodstock, with scheduled performances including The Killers, Imagine Dragons, Halsey, Miley Cyrus, Janelle Monáe, Dead and Company, Santana and David Crosby, fell apart over financial issues.
Lang at the time called the experience of trying to organize the anniversary show “a really bizarre trip,” telling that he hoped to hold the concert in the future.

While other large-scale festivals pre-dated Woodstock, the 1969 event served as something of a template for those that followed, Lang said. “A lot of them are modeled after Woodstock — Bonnaroo and Coachella, in particular,” Lang told in 2009. “There was a ritual that was created that keeps getting replicated.”
