Two years after the first sensational announcement, the first official documentary on Led Zeppelin, Becoming Led Zeppelin, is coming, directed by the English director Bernard MacMahon, which had, as we read in a statement by Led Zeppelin “An unprecedented access to the history of band », the opportunity to interview Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Robert Plant and clips of unpublished interviews with John Bonham.
Becoming Led Zeppelin is a film that no one thought could ever be made. The band’s meteoric rise to stardom was swift and virtually undocumented. With unparalleled access to the group and their personal archives, their full support and never-before-seen footage, Becoming Led Zeppelin will immerse you in the sights and sounds of their early career. For all the millions of people who will never see the band live, this is as close as you will get to being there. Before the stairway and the dragon, before the gold and the girls, there were simply four men and their love of music. Becoming Led Zeppelin reveals their individual journeys as they move through the music scene of the 1960’s, playing small clubs throughout Britain and performing on some of the biggest hits of the era, until their meeting in the summer of 1968 for a rehearsal that changes their lives forever. Their four journeys merge into one as they set out to conquer America on a rollercoaster ride that culminates in 1970 when they become the number one band in the world.
“With Becoming Led Zeppelin my goal was to make a new form of film, a documentary that resembles a musical. I wanted to weave together the four diverse stories of the band members before and after they formed their group with large sections of their story advanced with only music and imagery and to contextualise the music with the locations where it was created and the world events that inspired it. I used only original prints and negatives, with over 70,000 frames of footage manually restored, and devised fantasia sequences, inspired by Singin’ In The Rain, layering unseen performance footage with montages of posters, tickets and travel to create a visual sense of the freneticism of their early career.” – Bernard MacMahon (Director)

A due anni dal primo clamoroso annuncio è in arrivo il primo documentario ufficiale sui Led Zeppelin, Becoming Led Zeppelin, diretto dal regista inglese Bernard MacMahon, che ha avuto, come si legge in una dichiarazione dei Led Zeppelin «Un accesso senza precedenti alla storia della band», la possibilità di intervistare Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones e Robert Plant e spezzoni di interviste inedite a John Bonham.
Becoming Led Zeppelin è un film che nessuno pensava si sarebbe potuto mai realizzare. L’ascesa alla celebrità della band fu rapidissima e praticamente non documentata. Grazie all’accesso esclusivo al gruppo e ai suoi archivi personali, al pieno sostegno della band e alla disponibilità di filmati mai visti prima, Becoming Led Zeppelin vi immergerà nelle immagini e nei suoni dei loro esordi. Per tutti i milioni di persone che non vedranno mai la band dal vivo, questa è l’esperienza che più si avvicina alla partecipazione a un loro concerto. Prima di Starway to Heaven e della chitarra Dragon, prima dei dischi d’oro e delle ragazze, c’erano semplicemente quattro uomini e il loro amore per la musica. Becoming Led Zeppelin ci svela i loro percorsi individuali mentre si muovono sulla scena musicale degli anni Sessanta, suonando alcuni dei più grandi successi dell’epoca nei piccoli club della Gran Bretagna, finché nell’estate del 1968 si incontrano per provare insieme e le loro vite cambiano per sempre. “Con Becoming Led Zeppelin il mio obiettivo era quello di fare un nuovo tipo di film, un documentario che somigliasse a un musical. Volevo intrecciare le quattro diverse storie dei membri del gruppo prima e dopo la formazione della band, facendo raccontare ampie parti della loro storia solo dalla musica e dalle immagini, in modo da legare le canzoni ai luoghi in cui furono create e agli eventi che le ispirarono. Ho usato solo pellicole e negativi originali, con oltre 70.000 fotogrammi restaurati manualmente, e ho ideato delle sequenze di fantasia, ispirate a Singin’ In The Rain, sovrapponendo filmati inediti di esibizioni dal vivo a fotomontaggi di poster, biglietti e viaggi, per ricreare visivamente il senso di frenesia dei loro esordi.” – Bernard MacMahon (Regista)
