Bob Marley: 40th anniversary of the music pioneer’s death
UK/IT Version – It is 40 years since legendary reggae singer Bob Marley died of cancer in Miami, aged 36, on 11 May 1981.
Marley was born in 1945 to a white father and a black mother, in Jamaica.
His childhood was spent in poverty and he had little contact with his father, a naval officer who worked for the British government. He left home at 14 years old to pursue a music career in Kingston.
A follower of Rastafarianism as a teenager, in his songs he always put the themes of racist oppression at the center, from the very beginning and especially when he began playing in 1964 with the Wailers. To achieve this and freedom, according to Marley, the unification of the colored peoples was necessary.
In 1975 the world fame of “No Woman, No Cry”, from the album Natty Dread. This was followed by the next year’s hit, ‘Rastaman Vibration’, which stayed in the top 100 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US for a full four weeks. Over the course of his career, the singer-songwriter and guitarist has recorded 17 albums.
The 1977 album Exodus was named Album of the Century by Time Magazine
Four decades later, the Jamaican artist’s message of love and equality is still present, as are his songs from ‘No Women No Cry’ to ‘Jammin’ and ‘Africa Unite’. Robert Nesta Marley, aka Bob, was not only the king of reggae music, but also a political and religious activist and leader who helped spread Jamaican music and culture around the world.
Bob Marley will be celebrated in the next 2021-2022 season by the Ajax team, of which one of the official jerseys is dedicated to the king of reggae with its red, yellow and green colors on a black background.

La sua infanzia l’ha trascorsa nella povertà avendo pochi contatti con suo padre, un ufficiale della marina che lavorava per il governo britannico. A 14 anni abbandona il tetto materno per intraprendere la carriera musicale a Kingston.

Robert Nesta Marley, alias Bob, non era solo il re della musica reggae, ma anche un attivista e leader politico e religioso che ha contribuito a diffondere la musica e la cultura giamaicana in tutto il mondo.
Bob Marley sarà celebrato nella prossima stagione 2021-2022 dalla squadra dell’Ajax con una delle maglie ufficiali dedicata al re del reggae con i suoi colori rosso, giallo e verde su sfondo nero.
