Phil Collins: 70 years in between drums as well as microphone

Phil Collins doesn’t believe he has sold more than 150 million copies of his solo albums. Not bad for someone who became a singer almost by accident. It is not easy to be one of the richest pop stars in history and, at the same time, one of the most criticized by the specialized press and by fans of the first hour. Collins is everything and the opposite of everything. Romantic author and winner of Grammy and Oscar awards, narcissist accused of opportunism and sinister calculator. Like when he released his hit “Another Day in Paradise” in which the homelessness theme is treated without particular emotional involvement. Passionate fans won’t forgive him for converting the experimental and progressive sound of early Genesis to the commercial pop that Collins led the band to after becoming its undisputed leader. And there were even those who called him “the most hated man in rock”, “the pop star nobody likes”.
Phil Collins recalled how he had gained an added advantage ahead of his 1970 audition to become the drummer with Genesis. He was an old hand at trying out for bands by the time Peter Gabriel’s group was looking for its fourth drummer ahead of recording its third album Nursery Cryme.
“I’d never heard the band Genesis, I’d heard of them,” Collins said. “I went for the audition the same way I went for thousands of other auditions – and most of them I didn’t get. But when I went for this audition, it was a Peter Gabriel’s parents’ farm. … It was a beautiful day; they were auditioning out on the patio.
Collins recalled that they had a swimming pool. “Peter said, ‘Why don’t you go and have a swim while we’re auditioning the guys before you?’” he remembered. “So I went and had a swim. … I could hear anything that was going down – I knew the tunes before I actually auditioned. So when I came up to play, of course I walked straight into it. I knew all the things, so I got the job!”
“Something definitely changed when Phil joined the band,” Gabriel later said. “He was a real drummer – something I had never been too convinced of with earlier members .”
The three wives and as many divorces tell of a very turbulent private life that has dragged him into the trap of alcoholism and depression. And more than once he confessed that he had thought about suicide. Hearing problems and surgery on a vertebra after a fall made him lose the sensitivity of one hand. Phil Collins non ci crede di aver venduto più di 150 milioni di copie dei suoi album da solista. Non male per uno diventato cantante quasi per caso. Certo in «For Absent Friends» di «Nursery Crime» e «More fool me» di «Selling England by the pound» si era già sperimentato come voce solista dei Genesis. Ma si trattava di episodi sporadici. Puro divertissement. Per il resto solo cori e batteria. Almeno fino a quando Peter Gabriel non diede il ben servito alla band. Da allora centinaia di provini per trovare un sostituto. Senza esito. Che fare allora? Semplice, iniziò a cantare lui.
Non è facile essere una delle popstar più ricche della storia e, allo stesso tempo, una delle più criticate dalla stampa specializzata e dai fan della prima ora. Collins è tutto e il contrario di tutto. Autore romantico e vincitore di Grammy e premi Oscar, narcisista accusato di opportunismo e bieco calcolatore. Come quando pubblicò la sua hit “Another Day in Paradise” in cui il tema dei senzatetto è trattato senza particolare partecipazione emotiva. I fan più appassionati non gli perdonano di aver convertito il sound sperimentale e progressivo dei primi Genesis verso il pop commerciale a cui Collins condusse la band dopo esserne diventato il leader indiscusso. E ci fu perfino chi lo definì “l’uomo più odiato del rock”, “la popstar che non piace a nessuno”.
Era il 1970 quando Peter Gabriel e gli altri membri dei Genesis si ritrovarono senza batterista dopo l’addio di John Mayhew, il terzo dopo Jonathan Silver e Chris Stewart. Il gruppo iniziò così a fare delle audizioni per trovare un sostituto ed è proprio in quell’occasione che avvenne l’incontro con Phil Collins. il batterista ha spiegato che quella fu solo una delle tante audizioni alle quali partecipò in quel periodo, nessuna delle quali andò bene. Paradossalmente, quello con i Genesis fu probabilmente il provino al quale si presentò meno preparato eppure fu proprio quella la sua grande occasione. “Non avevo mai ascoltato i Genesis – ha ammesso Phil Collins – avevo solo sentito parlare di loro”.
Nonostante questo, Phil riuscì a cavarsela alla grande: “Le audizioni furono organizzate nella fattoria dei genitori di Peter Gabriel – ha raccontato – era una bellissima giornata e stavano facendo i provini nel patio”. I candidati erano molti e nella fattoria c’era una piscina: “Peter mi ha detto ‘Perché non ti fai un tuffo mentre aspetti il tuo turno?’ – ha ricordato Phil – così mi sono fatto una nuotata e nel frattempo ho ascoltato tutto ciò che accadeva fuori dall’acqua. In questo modo sono riuscito a imparare i pezzi prima dell’audizione. Quando è arrivato il mio momento, sono andato sicuro a suonare, li sapevo tutti e così ho ottenuto il posto!”.
Quella giornata ha sicuramente dato una svolta alla carriera dei Genesis, come ha spiegato lo stesso Peter Gabriel: “Qualcosa è nettamente cambiato quando Phil è entrato nella band – ha spiegato – era un vero batterista, aveva qualcosa che non credo di aver mai avuto prima con i membri precedenti”.
Le tre mogli e gli altrettanti divorzi raccontano una vita privata assai turbolenta che lo ha trascinato nella trappola di alcolismo e depressione. E più di una volta confessò di aver pensato al suicidio. I problemi all’udito e l’intervento a una vertebra dopo una caduta gli fecero perdere la sensibilità di una mano. Sempre più malandato continua a non arrendersi nonostante gli acciacchi siano sempre più evidenti. «Il fatto che la gente sia diventata così stufa di me non è stata colpa mia – disse un giorno – Non c’è da stupirsi che la gente abbia cominciato a odiarmi. Mi dispiace aver ottenuto così tanto successo. Non intendevo andasse in quel modo!».
I Genesis partiranno per il nuovo tour The Last Domino? a settembre. Nella formazione, oltre a Phil Collins, Tony Banks e Mike Rutherford, ci sarà alla batteria Nicholas Collins, figlio di Phil.
