Eddie Van Halen has left us

Edward Lodewijk van Halen, aka Eddie (Amsterdam, January 26, 1955 – Santa Monica, October 6, 2020), was a Dutch naturalized American guitarist.

Co-founder of the eponymous group, he is counted among the most influential, innovative and talented guitarists of the twentieth century, master of the tapping technique, which consists in playing the instrument with both hands on the keyboard in order to cover unusually wide and impossible intervals. to be achieved with the traditional legate, had a great impact on subsequent generations of guitarists in particular in the hard rock and heavy metal scene.

Beyond this, however, Van Halen constitutes a point of reference for various generations of guitarists both for his original approach in the creation of solos and for his great attention to rhythmics, which includes a great mastery of sound and even the customization of the instrument, which after him became a habit of rock artists.

Guitar World magazine lists him as the best guitarist ever.

In 1983 he was called by Quincy Jones to play guitar in Michael Jackson’s Beat it. The producer had to call him three times, Eddie thought it was a joke.
In this regard, a curious anecdote can be cited: a few years later Jennifer Batten, Jackson’s session player, performed the same solo in a recording studio where, by chance, van Halen was also present; after listening to the first notes of the solo, Eddie went to the adjacent studio and asked Batten to do it again with his Kramer 5150. Once finished he said to her to let him review it because he hadn’t done it since the time of recording, he had forgotten.

Edward Lodewijk van Halen, in arte Eddie (Amsterdam, 26 gennaio 1955 – Santa Monica, 6 ottobre 2020), era un chitarrista olandese naturalizzato americano.

Co-fondatore dell’omonimo gruppo, è annoverato tra i chitarristi più influenti, innovativi e talentuosi del XX secolo, maestro della tecnica del tapping, che consiste nel suonare lo strumento con entrambe le mani sulla tastiera in modo da coprire coperture insolitamente ampie e intervalli impossibili. da raggiungere con il legato tradizionale, ebbe un grande impatto sulle generazioni successive di chitarristi in particolare nella scena hard rock e heavy metal.

Al di là di questo, però, Van Halen costituisce un punto di riferimento per diverse generazioni di chitarristi sia per il suo approccio originale nella creazione degli assoli sia per la sua grande attenzione alla ritmica, che include una grande padronanza del suono e anche la personalizzazione dello strumento, che dopo di lui divenne un’abitudine degli artisti rock.

La rivista Guitar World lo elenca come il miglior chitarrista di sempre.

A tal proposito si può citare un curioso aneddoto: pochi anni dopo Jennifer Batten, session player di Jackson, esegue lo stesso assolo in uno studio di registrazione dove, per caso, é presente anche van Halen; dopo aver ascoltato le prime note dell’assolo, Eddie si reca nello studio adiacente e chiede a Batten di rifarlo con la sua Kramer 5150. Una volta finito le domanda di farglielo rivedere perché non lo faceva da quando l’aveva  registrato, l’aveva dimenticato.
